Camp Day at Municipal Stadium

    Wednesday, July 30, 2008

by Timothy Tilghman

Experiencing Minor League baseball in Washington County is unlike visiting any other ball club in Maryland. Municipal Stadium, home of the Hagerstown Suns, was erected in 1930. Walking into the facility is like a timetrip into the past. Not many original antiquated structures remain today so it has a unique ambiance for sports fans.

Although Municipal Stadium may not necessarily have the luxurious amenities found at Regency Furniture Stadium or Ripken Stadium, Hagerstown spectators are treated every third inning to the Dancing Cowboy who has the most important duty of hand-changing the numerals hung on the outfield scoreboard to update the ballgame.

The Hagerstown Suns are an A level affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Lexington Legends from Kentucky are an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Both ball clubs are associated with the Northern division of the South Atlantic League.

Friday, July 30th was Camp Day so the venue was noisier than usual with all of the children huddled under the shaded sections. It was a beautiful 78* F for an afternoon at the baseball diamond. Twyla Hunt sang the National Anthem and the ballgame got underway with the first pitch at 11:10 am.

The Hagerstown Press Box rests above Municipal Stadium like a crows nest. The ariel view is birdseye perfect to follow the baseball as it crosses home plate. Lexington Legends #31 Matthew Cusick swatted the first hme run of the game in the op of the first inning.
